Spice Is Not Always Nice!

Things are not always what they seem.

Things are not always what they seem.

I love to spice up rice pudding especially with cinnamon and nutmeg.  This morning I reached into the cabinet and grabbed the spices.  After I had sprinkled both spices on my rice pudding I noticed the container I thought was cinnamon was actually cumin.  I really like the flavor of cumin and use it often.  However, cumin is not a spice I think of with rice pudding.  Cumin, as a spice, is not always as nice as cinnamon.

As you can see from the picture the container of cinnamon on the right looks much like the container of cumin on the left.  The containers may appear to be the same or similar.  The spices do not taste the same or even similar.  After removing as much cumin as I could I gave it a try.  Not as tasty but I could tolerate it.

Makes me think of the story in Genesis 3 and Eve’s conversation with the serpent in the Garden of Eden.  In Genesis 2:16-17 God give Adam permission to eat from any tree of the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  As the serpent talks with Eve in Genesis 3:1-3 the message sounds the same – kind of.  The words “touch it” are added.

Forbidden Fruit is not as desirable after all.

God’s Word is sufficient, pleasant, and unchanging.  Nothing need be added or taken away.  Discerning the truth we hear is important.  Make sure what  looks and sounds like God’s Word is actually what’s in the written Word of God.
